komodo dragonVaranus komodoensis or known as Komodo Dragon, is famous for their size and killing ability. Komodo is the largest lizard in the world and inhabits Komodo Island for centuries. An adult Komodo dragon usually weighs around 70 kilograms or sometimes even more.

Komodo dragon’s tail sized as long as its body and can be used to catch the unreachable prey by standing on this strong tail. The swashing of its tails also very dangerous. It can throw an adult 2 feet away only by 1 squash.

Beside its powerful tail, komodo dragon also has strong claw that usually used to climb trees by the younger Komodo and as a weapon for the bigger komodo dragon, which their massive body hold them up to climb.

Komodo dragon bites are also exceptionally venomous and can kill its prey within hours with symptoms like inhibition of blood clotting, lowering of blood pressure, muscle paralysis, and the induction of hypothermia, leading to shock and loss of consciousness.

komodo dragonNot to mention their powerful teeth that able to tear their prey effortlessly. Komodo dragon has an ability to swallow their prey wholly, since their jaw is loosely articulated and stomach that can expand and accommodate up to one fat goat.

After meals, komodo dragons usually drag themselves to the sunny spot. They do this to fasten their metabolism, because if the food they swallow processed to long by the body, it will turn poisoning them. After one big meal, komodo can survive without food for 1 month. That’s because komodo have a very slow metabolism.

For drinking, komodo have a certain way. They will take a mouthful of water, lift their head and the water will flow trough their throat. Komodo can not suck nor lap water with their tongue since they do not have diaphragm.

Komodo have very poor eyesight. That is why they use their super tongue ability to detect prey. Komodo can detect dead animal and blood from 4 – 9 kilometers away. That’s the reason why women who happened to having period are not recommended to visit Komodo Island during their menstruation cycle.

Mating season can be real had for male Komodo since female komodo are very antagonistic and will give a hard fight and it could cause injury if male komodo not careful. Male komodo also have to trough a fight before able to get a partner. Afterward, female will lay their eggs on soil burrow while the mother lay there and protect her eggs. After 7 – 8, month incubation period, these eggs will hatch by the end of rainy season when there are plenty of insects to eat. Since the newborn komodo are very fragile and defenseless, they become the main object of predators.

These young komodo spend most of their times up the trees to avoid being eaten by the predators and adult komodo who also act cannibal and prey over the young komodo. Komodo also able to control their population by eating their own eggs.

Komodo can be found at Komodo Island, which includes three major island: Komodo, Rinca and Padar and also many small island. Actually komodo can be seen more at Rinca Island than Komodo Island. Apart from being the homeland of Komodo, this park also noted for its rich marine life like coral reef, various fishes and semi enclosed bay.
